Nov 22, 2016 – Proverbs 18

Read Proverbs 18

This chapter is packed full of thoughts about relationships and things that affect relationships – friends, wife, effect of speech, pride.

As you read, think about these questions…

  • What relationships do you see mentioned?
  • How can types of speech affect these relationships?
  • Why is wisdom important in relationships?
  • Friends are mentioned several times. What is said about friendships?

Everyone needs to evaluate their relationships to make sure their relationships are healthy. According to this chapter, what do you need to do to make healthier relationships?

And then my favorite verse is in here…

The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the LORD. -v22

Oct 18, 2016 – Proverbs 17

Read Proverbs 17

This chapter continues with ideas surrounding righteous living. Many topics are addressed.

Pick out one or two topics you see in this chapter, and think about these things…

  • Why does the author include that in this chapter?
  • How are doing with living according to the wisdom given?
  • How can you improve?

Did you have trouble finding a topic to think about? How about speech or quarreling or money?

It is safer to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than to confront a fool caught in foolishness. -v12

Oct 11, 2016 – Prov 16

Read Proverbs 16

Now, Proverbs moves to talking about righteous living. Rather than contrasting with wickedness, the focus is righteousness. Many topics are presented that we’ve already seen, yet these extoll the virtues of righteousness.

I want you to look for what this chapter says about two topics – making plans, and pride.

  • What is the most important point that is made regarding making plans?
  • How does the Lord figure in to our plans?
  • Why is pride and humility a topic here?
  • How does pride and humility affect our walk with God?

Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city. v32

Oct 4, 2016 – Proverbs 15

Read Proverbs 15

This is the final chapter in a lengthy section contrasting wickedness and righteousness. Many ideas previously seen are also in this chapter.

But, I’d like you to focus on a specific topic today. Speech or the way you talk appears frequently in this chapter.

Look back through this chapter and think about these things…

  • What are the verses that refer to speech?
  • How does the wise person handle their speech?
  • List the characteristics of speech that are positive… negative…
  • Why is it important to be wise in speaking?

Pick out one of the positive/wise aspects of speech you see in this chapter. Think about ways you either been successful or not. Now, ask God to help you be positive/wise with your speech, and be thankful that God is patient with us!

The lips of the wise give good advice; -v7

Sep 27, 2016 – Proverbs 14

Read Proverbs 14

This is another chapter where righteous living and wicked living are compared and contrasted. As you think about this chapter, I’d like you to think about the following.

Identify 5 actions of the wicked or foolish that you have fallen prey to.

Identify 5 actions of the righteous that you would like to exemplify.

This is an ideal time to ask the Lord for strength to leave the wicked/foolish behaviors behind, and to learn to be righteous.

Fear of the Lord is a life-giving fountain; it offers escape from the snares of death. -v27

Sep 20, 2016 – Prov 13

Read Proverbs 13

Chapter 13 continues the thoughts contrasting righteousness and wickedness.

As you read through this chapter, think about these questions…

  • Do any of the topics bother you?
  • Do you agree with any of the proverbs?
  • Do you disagree or struggle with any of these proverbs?
  • Which of the topics do you need to address in your personal life?
  • Are there any sins related to these proverbs that you need to confess?

Righteousness is the goal of the Christian life. Ask the Lord to show where you are deficient with respect to a righteous life.

Godliness guards the path of the blameless, but the evil are misled by sin. -v6

Sep 13, 2016 – Proverbs 12

Read Proverbs 12

This chapter is similar to the last few. It is a collection of wise sayings and principles from Solomon. He expects the reader to learn from them. With that in mind, then…

  • What do you learn about wickedness and righteousness?
  • What do you learn about relationships?
  • What do you learn about marriage?
  • What do you learn about truth and deceit?
  • What do you learn about work and laziness?

The really important question that comes now is, what do you learn about yourself and what do you need to correct in your life in order to be more like Christ? Ask the Lord to give you the strength to make these changes.

The way of the godly leads to life; that path does not lead to death. -v28

Sep 6, 2016 – Proverbs 11

Read Proverbs 11

Honesty, speech, pride, gossip, beauty, generosity, wealth. These are all addressed in today’s reading.

  • What is said about these things in Proverbs 11?
  • Did you see anything unusual here?
  • How can our response to these things be godly? wicked?

Many of us are very wealthy when compared to most of the world. Give some thought as to how you can use that wealth to serve our Lord.

If you are poor, think about how you can use your situation to serve God.

The Lord detests people with crooked hearts, but he delights in those with integrity. -v20

Aug 30, 2016 – Proverbs 10

Read Proverbs 10

This chapter appears to be a collection of wise sayings given by Solomon. However there are themes here that consistent with what is written elsewhere in Proverbs.

What is said about the “godly” in this chapter?

How are the lazy portrayed?

Why is there a contrast between the godly and wicked?

What is said about speech in this chapter?

If you take the time to think about the proverbs, you will find much that is applicable to our lives today. What is one thing you can learn from this chapter that will affect your life today?

We have happy memories of the godly, but the name of a wicked person rots away. -v7

Aug 16, 2016 – Proverbs 9

Read Proverbs 9

As you read this chapter today, watch for these things…

  • watch for how wisdom is calling
  • watch for the contrast between wisdom and mockers when correction is given
  • watch for how Folly is contrasted with Wisdom

The entire book of Proverbs encourages us to seek wisdom. But, in vv 11-12 in this chapter, we can see some tangible benefits to gaining wisdom.

Seek wisdom. Ask the Lord to give you wisdom. Think about how a wise person would respond in your situation. Above all, don’t go down the path of folly.

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. -v10
